February is Black History month, and we invite you to join us at Marquis, Consonus, and AgeRight as we engage in activities that highlight achievements and contributions by African Americans in our history. Learn more here.
Black History Month was initially recognized in 1976, and every February since has been officially designated as such by the sitting US President. There are countless black leaders and civil rights pioneers we celebrate during Black History Month. One such individual is Sojourner Truth, an activist and author who was born into slavery before escaping to freedom in 1826. You can learn more about Sojourner and other incredible African American Heroes like George Washington Carver (scientist and inventor), Bessie Coleman (the first African American woman to earn a pilot’s license), and Booker T. Washington (educator) at this link.
Finally, throughout our organization this month we will be engaging in activities like clay making while learning about Augusta Savage (artist, sculptor, educator and community leader), and assembling a Freedom Quilt while learning about the Underground Railroad. We encourage you to participate, learn and celebrate Black History month and African American heroes and culture alongside us!
