Near the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, visitations to senior care facilities were stopped abruptly, just one of the heartbreaking realities of the past year. But while the visit restrictions were hugely difficult, at Marquis Oregon City it gave two residents the opportunity to forge a new bond.

When Marquis Oregon City residents were encouraged to remain in their rooms as much as possible, two residents, Carol and Bruny, started chatting with each other from their doorways across the hall. They quickly developed a special bond and friendship, and as the weather started to get better they transitioned their conversations to the outdoors. There they soaked in the sunshine and enjoyed each other’s company.

During Marquis Oregon City’s Veterans Day celebration, Bruny was honored with a Quilt of Valor in recognition of her service in the Navy, and Carol was right alongside as she received it. Now even as visitations to the facility have increased, Carol and Bruny still find time to enjoy each other’s company. They both established pen pals during COVID-19, and often share with each other the cards and letters they receive. Their friendship, though forged in the pandemic, will last long after it.
