Belonging is essential to humans.
Psychologists rank our need to belong on par with our need for love. When companies emphasize a culture of belonging, they call everyone in, creating space in the conversation to address our shared humanity and build a bridge to greater empathy and inclusion for the groups that are the most marginalized in the workplace today.
To build a culture of belonging and reap the many benefits for employers and employees, we must have a clear understanding of what it means to belong at work. We feel we belong at work when we are:
- Seen for our unique contributions
- Connected to our coworkers
- Supported in our daily work and career development
- Proud of our organization’s values and purpose
